an eatery just for me!

today i ate lunch at a teeny co-op in a neighborhood near my house. it’s just two rooms: one is the co-op proper, and the other is a cafe. the co-op is the only place in town that carries follow your heart vegan gourmet cheese (god bless ’em), and the cafe is totally vegetarian. in fact, most of the items on the menu are vegan, and the remaining items can be made vegan on request. how cool is that?

i’m used to (and honestly don’t mind) scanning menus for the 2 or 3 options that i can "make work" and then picking the best thing… but this was an adventure. i could eat anything on the menu! i ended up getting the burrito, which had black beans, spicy rice, spinach, avocado, onions, and vegan cheese. it was delicious, plus there were tasty chips ‘n salsa on the side. my dining pal got a veggie-and-vegan-cheese sandwich piled high with all kinds of good stuff.

i will definitely go back. they had soups, and comfort foods, and they even serve vegan brunch on weekends (including vanilla cinnamon french toast! i had no idea there was such a thing as vegan french toast! i’m very excited about this). they also had some amazing-sounding smoothies (including a peanut butter cup version) on the menu.

oh! and not only THAT, but i also learned that they carry tings on the co-op side, which is fantastic, because the only other place in the whole city that carries them is at least 20 minutes away (compared to this place, which is maybe 5 minutes). hooray! and not only that, but i told the girl who does the ordering about the wonderful joy of sunflower butter tings, and she told me she’d look into stocking those as well.

after that, we went to a frozen custard shop for dessert, only to find that they were out of their non-dairy soft-serve for the week. boo hoo. not to be deterred, i decided to play the "create your own smoothie" game and had them whip up an apple-strawberry-banana concoction. it was awesome. i drank all of it even though i was ridiculously full.

i know it’s nerdy, but i thought the whole "vegan options? no problem!" angle was very exciting. i had a lovely day.

  1. I’m so happy for you! I can completely relate on having slim to none options in the eating out department. Louisiana veganim is not high on the chart for convience! I would just be in heaven to find a place like that!! Not nerdy at all! 🙂

  2. My hubby worked at a place just like that before we moved. He was the cook in the cafe, and there was a small grocery attached. Yay for supporting small veg*n businesses!
