the pigeon update

i’m very sorry to report that my sweet pigeon is no longer with us. i spoke to the humane society this morning, and they said her wing was severely fractured, and there just wasn’t a whole lot they could do for her. she was euthanized.

thank you all for your comments and support on my previous post. i know that several of you had ideas about whether euthanasia would be necessary, and right now i don’t have the heart to google around and do the research, because i feel too sad about this poor bird. for right now i’m going to have to take my wildlife rehabber at his word, and maybe later i’ll look into it.

right now i’ll just focus on how, if she had to die, it was much better to die in a quiet, safe, painless way than to get run over by a car, or starve to death in the cold. *sniff*

  1. 😦 I’m so sorry to hear this. You still did the right thing to take her in, though. She never would have survived in the wild with her wing broken.

  2. Poor thing, but it is true – she wouldn’t have survived in the wild, you gave her the best shot she had, and at the very least she had some comfortable time and a peaceful death. I still can’t believe the jerk that TRIED to run her over. At least she didn’t have that.

  3. awwwww….it’s so heartbreaking. 😦
you’re such a good person for rescuing her.
i’ve also heard from a wildlife rehabber(remember the seagull i tried to save last year?), that certain wing breaks on birds are fatal no matter what.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear about the bird. You are such a sweet soul.
I hate this but I always think of you whenever I see a cute coat. I just bought a new one at Target. The picture online doesn’t do it justice. It’s super cute and very warm. They have it in black (which I got) and in a wheat color. For $40 how can you go wrong? http://tinyurl.com/26jd2f

  6. thank you again, everyone. truly. you’re the best.
and vivaciousvegan–i love that you think of me when you see cute coats! and i love that better still, you report back!! hee. the coat you linked does indeed look very cute–and like you said, who can go wrong for $40? how warm do you think it will be? appropriate for really cold winters, or more like a “fall coat”? i am totally going to go to target and check it out on friday. thank you!!

  7. Just in case you didn’t get to Target, it’s very warm. Not super thick like a wool pea coat but it’s heavy enough. I know it’s only fall but lately, in the mornings, it’s high 30’s and low 40’s when I leave for work. It keeps me quite toasty during the long walk from the car to my building.

  9. DAMN THEM!!! YOU NEVER EVER EXECUTE –SORRY, EUTHANIZE, — A PIGEON!!! Pigeons are the oldest know domesticated animal — they bond to a human as easily as to another Pigeon. I have been a devoted Pigeon rescuer for over 25 years and have had loving Pigeons that had totally lost a wing!!! They make excellent companions. NEVER TAKE ANY ANIMAL TO ANY SHELTER — IT IS USUALLY A DEATH SENTENCE — TAKE THEM TO AN EXPERIENCED RESCUER WHO REALLY CARES. Pigeons love life more than most humans and are willing to put up with a lot of injury, pain and inconvenience just to ENJOY BEING! There is no such thing as a “wild” or “feral” Pigeon — the so-called ones are in reality homeless pets. Feel free to contact me: grejr (at) earthlink (dot)net
