the official word on north face

well hooray! a couple of you have asked, and a couple of you have helped, and i finally (duh) figured out where to contact north face for customer service, and it is now my pleasure to confirm yesterday’s good news… i just got an email from north face that sounds very much like the one laura received:

Dear [over-exuberant vegan customer],

Thank you for contacting The North Face. The fur on all of our jackets is
synthetic.

Best regards,

Eric Worthington

The North Face

so, hooray!! that cutie-spendy coat is indeed safe (i have NO idea why they’re not labeling their fur as faux all over the place, though. weird). thanks to lisa for bringing the coat to my attention in the first place, and thanks to laura for chiming in yesterday–you gave me a final burst of hope. hee!

my next step is to decide what to do about it. i ordered the merrell coat last night (finally) because i was SO sick of hemming and hawing over it when there’s no way to know if i’ll like it unless i see it in person and try it on. this north face coat is much more similar to the style i was hoping for, but it’s also $100 more than the merrell. but… so many pretty colors (i’m currently waffling between bluestone and asphalt grey), and so much cuteness! sigh.

  1. I love that coat! I’m going to have to recommend it to the girl. It seems spendy, yes, but I can vouch that most North Face coats are very well made and will last you for years- it’ll pay for itself easily.

  2. Hi, Lisa here. Sorry, I was away for a couple of days and didn’t see your questions about the North Face jacket. Yup, it’s faux fur! I’d wondered the same thing, but Zappos customer service confirmed for me. And then the UPS gods delivered the coat Monday and I could see for myself. I love it. So does my omnivore co-worker, who now wants one of her own. It’s so toasty, well-designed (pockets in the right places, including an interior mp3 player pocket, lots of nice little touches), and well made–and when I put on my movie-star sunglasses with it, I actually feel a little glamorous (as glamorous as you can feel while slip-sliding down the sidewalk in frigid temperatures, anyway; next on the list: boots).
I know what you’re saying about wanting something with cleaner lines (me too), and I say keep hope alive! But till that holy grail of a coat is invented, I’m gonna love this one. I actually think it’s a nice middle ground between casual and dressy, and could go either way, depending on how you accessorize it. Woo-hoo! I’m actually looking forward to more cold weather now. Oh, the insanity/veganity/humanity! πŸ™‚

  3. I have a hard time finding NF coats that aren’t filled with down, except for the sleeker ones without hoods. Jen’s winter coats from H&M had faux fur trim on the hoods, which I was very annoyed by, but at least they come off the hood, so you can still stay warm without making it look like fur fashion is acceptable. The more real it looks, the more it sends the signal that wearing fur is cool.

  4. stegan–thanks!! your enthusiastic response was all i needed to tip me over the edge and order. ha! i ordered the asphalt grey, and i’ll be sure to post again once i have both coast (this and the merrell) so i can give my impressions. πŸ™‚ i don’t mind spending bank on a coat as long as i like it and i think it will really last… i know that if i tried to “actually” replace my wool/cashmere j.crew coat (the one i’m trying to dump right now), i’d be spending at least $300 to get the thinsulate version, so i’m probably coming out even here.
lisa–awesome, i had no idea you’d ordered it already! i hope i love it as much as you do. what color did you go with?
eric–yeah, i hear you on the down. this one is primaloft, which is a pretty sweet find… and the fur collar is detachable. i generally feel the same way you do… if it looks too realistic, i worry about the message we send. then again, i have boatloads of pleather shoes and i wear those without a second thought. anyhow, i went through this last spring (you may remember!) when i couldn’t decide if i should buy that faux-shearling coat. in any event, if i like this coat and decide to keep it, step 2 will be deciding what i think about the collar. and if i decide to keep the collar on, i will MOS DEF be wearing a little “faux” or “no fur” pin just so there’s no question!

  5. I went with the asphalt gray (I ordered the eggplant purple and bluestone to compare, too; gray won), and I am in love w/it. And the compliments just keep rolling in, which is so much fun, because as I mentioned before: years of ugly vegan winter jackets.
I hope you like yours as much as I like mine. πŸ™‚

  7. That’s the exact same coat I was asking North Face about! I would actually remove the fur trim, but I wanted to know if it was real or faux, as I didn’t want to pay for real fur even if I wasn’t going to wear it. I always used to think that North Face stuff was just too price-y for what it was, but I was recently looking for a new sleeping bag and the North Face one (the Cat’s Meow) fit me the best and was really nice. It seems extremely well made, so I’ve had a change of heart about North Face.
I can’t wait to hear how you like the new coat.
