celebrating an accomplishment

i’m supposed to come up with an idea for celebrating my successful tenure vote, because we were unable to celebrate on The Day. i’m not very creative, so i’m not sure what to suggest. part of me wants to do the easy thing–dinner and a movie, because it’s such a normal couple activity. we haven’t been able to do that very much in the past several years (due to tenure-fueled-worry-stress), so maybe that would be an appropriate celebration. also it would be a good excuse to get out and see juno, which i’ve been itching to do for awhile now.

honestly, i’ve been daydreaming for soooo long about When I Get Tenure that i’m not even sure what to do with myself at this point. get a massage and a pedicure? go on a shopping spree? adopt a dog?

i’m going to keep brainstorming. if you have cool ideas for how to celebrate a life turning point kind of deal, please share! all i know is that it will definitely involve really yummy vegan food.

  1. get a tattoo!
    kidding.
How about you and your husband go away for a weekend? A spa weekend or a cottage or something like that? The two of you can spend some much needed time relaxing and hanging out alone 🙂

  2. dog-shaped jewelry! tattoo of a dog wearing jewelry while watching Juno! uh, dinner and a movie with a dog! spa weekend of jewelry making!
I suck at finding the right way to memorialize these things, too. when my book came out I drove around town handing out copies to friends and then went home and freaked out. but not in that happy way. 😀

  3. gladcow, you totally cracked me up!! and i definitely empathize with the whole anti-climactic thing. it seems like it should be such a big deal, and yet here i am, puttering around, normal-life-ing it. hee.
spa weekend sounds fun–we’ve never done anything like that before and it seems so indulgent (but in a nice way!).
i gots no tattoos but i’ve been secretly tempted in the quietest ways.
we HAVE been considering adopting a dog for a looong time now but so far haven’t gone further than brief fostering, basically.
must keep thinking! thanks for the input so far–it helps!

  5. First off I would say you need to update your ABOUT page to say that you have TENURE!! How about you go see a movie and I will secretly pretend that I am you and have tenure, rather than still being a student and far away from even dreaming of tenure.
